Guitar master, John Mayer is back with a new single that closes the curtain of yet another summer in the perfect way. ‘Carry Me Away’ breathes much of the same air as Mayer’s previous single ‘I Guess I Just Feel Like’ but, finds it’s own progressive, ever-expanding way of hitting the listener with a melodic masterclass.
Lyrically John Mayer seems to be working in a similar creative space to his most recent projects, showing a maturity to his word-crafting, and finding the perfect spaces to slot in an uplifting chorus. Mayer is reaching out his hand to someone else on this track and asking them to let him give in to them. While the words are quite simplistic, they’re certainly effective as Mayer sings, “You know I need you, and that’s for sure. You’re just the kind of crazy I’ve been looking for”.
As to be expected with a Mayer song, the instrumentation takes the whole track to a new level. This is even more prominent than usual with ‘Carry Me Away’. The songs builds itself up, layer upon layer as it progresses, until it reaches its calming explosion of sound during the latter half of the track.
Vocally John Mayer is right at home during ‘Carry Me Away’. Not only does he pick his tones to perfection, helping to create such a powerful piece of music, he begins to layer some of his vocal takes over one another towards the climax of the track, allowing it to sound even more epic. The brilliant production adds to this however, which also aids the fact that this song and Mayer’s previous release seem to share a connection.
Weather or not John Mayer is planning a full-length album, only time will tell. But for now enjoy the song and let it close out your summer as you prepare for the rest of the year.
